The vertical black weatherboards are a major design feature. They are nominally 7″ by 1″ (actually about 160mm by 23mm), rough-sawn or very roughly planed, and stained black with Solignum Architectural Black. The back layer is of narrow boards nailed directly to the low-density block wall, and the front layer is nailed to that. Many of the boards have now warped which gives entry to wasps, small birds and possibly even mice.

If you just need to replace one or two weatherboards, first contact the Committee to see if there are any spares already on site. If not, get a treated rail 4.8m x 22mm x 200mm from Timberstore in Beaconsfield and cut what you need from that. You will need to apply two coats of Solignum Architectural Ebony all around before installing it.

We have developed specifications for replacing the weatherboards and improving the insulation of the walls behind them. See the Roofing and Weatherboards page for more details.
